Digital Forensics Basics

This course explains investigative methods and standards for the acquisition, extraction, preservation, analysis, and deposition of digital evidence from storage devices. Using realistic forensics situations, learn how to find traces of illegal or illicit activities using computer forensics tools and manual techniques. Also, learn how to recover data intentionally hidden or encrypted by perpetrators.

Course Objectives
  • Explain data storage, components of common storage devices, memory management and file system organization
  • Identify the forensics investigative process, requirements, documentation and rules for collecting and acquiring evidence
  • Describe evidentiary reporting to include activities of expert witnesses, types of acceptable evidence and the requirements of written and oral reports
  • Understand forensics issues pertaining to cloud computing, as well as mobile and gaming console devices
(Note: two credit hours through ACE are provided only if all four courses, AWR-138, AWR-139, AWR-173 & AWR-178, within the Online for IT Professionals (Cyber 201) track are completed).
Target Audience

IT staff and law enforcement officers and/or agents interested in furthering their knowledge regarding digital forensics.
