About Course

Malware Prevention, Discovery, and Recovery (MPDR) is an intermediate-level course is designed for technical personnel who monitor and protect our nation’s critical cyber infrastructure. Students learn how to recognize, identify, and analyze malware; the remediation process to eliminate the malware; and proper procedures to recover from the attack and regain network connectivity in a timely manner. This course integrates hands-on computer lab applications to maximize the student’s learning experience.

Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Identify malware types used during course
  • Recognize the architecture of virtual machines (VMs)
  • Recognize the dangers of working with live malware
  • Understand various preventative methods and technologies, their strengths and weaknesses, and the root causes and infection vectors used by modern malware
  • Recognize the methods and actions that can be taken to detect, intercede and recover from a malware attack
  • Determine how anti-virus and anti-malware defenses are designed and how they are defeated
  • Identify and execute various on-line and downloadable tools that will help identify malware quickly and safely
  • Demonstrate methods and tools to safely and effectively identify, classify and respond to malware without allowing the malware to execute

Target Audience

Technical personnel and technical managers working within our nation’s critical infrastructure in both the public and private sectors. Examples include law enforcement, state and local government, public utilities, health care providers, colleges and universities, or any other agency identified as a critical infrastructure by DHS/FEMA. Agencies can be local, city, state, federal or tribal in nature. 

Prerequisites

This course is a mid-level hands-on course where prior knowledge and experience is required. Participants must meet one of the following criteria: 
Minimum Prerequisite:  Minimum of two years experience as a system or network administrator, or as an IT security specialist; or should have successfully completed the NCPC course, PER-256 Comprehensive Cybersecurity Defense. 
Preferred Prerequisite:  Any experience with computer network intrusion response, plus a minimum of three years of experience as a system or network administrator.
